When mindreading is combined with emotional mirroring (feeling what the other is feeling), we experience empathy – seeing and feeling the world from the perspective of the other.Įmpathy = Mindreading + Emotional Mirroring Shoe-shifting Some people are more gifted at mindreading than others (there’s a free scientific self-test here). Mindreading is what psychologists today call our capacity to put ourselves in the shoes of the other and see the world from their perspective.

Angela’s she’s set up by an angel with a grudge, accused of treason, and stripped of her status. She’s been at this for a long time, and she knows that you have to kill the Hellspawn while they’re young and still inexperienced.Īngela’s spear becomes a central plot point in the Angela 3-issue mini-series (1994-1995), written by Gaiman and drawn by Greg Capullo. We get some background in the issue’s beginning, where she lures a Medieval Spawn to his doom by posing as a damsel in distress. Angela is fierce – she’s all swords and spears, sharp edges and ribbons, and she’s a hunter, menacing and smart. Spawn #9 is gorgeously drawn – it’s a Todd McFarlane piece, of course it’s gorgeous. They tussled, his cape went into defense mode, and sucked the two into another dimension Angela flees for her life, leaving her spear behind. Created by Neil Gaiman and Todd McFarlane Angela made her debut in Spawn #9 way back in 1993 when she came to earth to hunt poor Al Simmons – Spawn – who had no idea what her problem was. A redheaded, badass angel who hunted Hellspawn. This week, after suffering the slings and arrows of Marvel’s retconned Angela, I decided it was time to look back fondly, when Angela was written by Neil Gaiman and was an absolute badass from Heaven.Ī long time ago – about 20 years now – in a galaxy not very far away, an angel appeared. Since Throwback Thursday has become a popular thing all over the interwebs, I thought I’d take a trip through my longboxes and come up with a Throwback Thursday offering of my own. D, a once-incendiary JD who is in the twilight of her career, we get the disconnection between art and artist that makes this book run: Juvenile Delinquents are probably not as much pop stars as much as they’re just assholes who insist on bursts of disruptive selfishness.Īny artist reading this book will surely see themselves in it, because we’re all self-absorbed already. These juvenile delinquents are Elvis and The Rock and Jennifer Lawrence, except their work is held up as a series of meaningful statements in additional to cultural touch-points. I hesitate to call them “pranks” like I would hesitate to call “A Day In the Life” a “little ditty.” His new book, Brat, takes the idea of juvenile delinquency and turns into celebrity culture, a sort of performance art where the tantrums and lashings-out of its perpetrators into acts of beauty and admiration. For years now Michael DeForge has been building these fucked-up worlds that sit on top of and inside our own world all at once, as if there’s a dimension we can’t comprehend where we’re all just twigs or neckless shapes with the same problems of simply not knowing how to be. Mark Athitakis of The Washington Post called McConaughey's poetry "cringeworthy" and criticized his wisdom for being unrelatable, calling the book "stuffed with vaporous, circular proverbs for would-be McConaugheys." In their review, The Times of India wrote, "The writing is conversational and easy to read, though this is one book whose audiobook form is worth listening to. As of February 2022, the book has spent 55 weeks on the list. The book was a major best-seller, debuting at number one on The New York Times non-fiction best-seller list for the week ending October 24, 2020. It has been described as a memoir but McConaughey has called it an "approach book". McConaughey described the book as a collection of "stories, prayers, poems, people and places and a whole bunch of bumper stickers." The book includes stories and insights from McConaughey's life in chronological order. Greenlights originated from diaries and journals McConaughey began writing when he was fourteen years old. These are the legends that Asha, daughter of the king of Firgaard, has grown up learning in hushed whispers, drawn to the forbidden figures of the past. But where there is light, there must be darkness-and so there was also the Iskari. In the beginning, there was the Namsara: the child of sky and spirit, who carried love and laughter wherever he went. And did you notice that the scroll works matches those blades we saw earlier in the trailer? Intricate weaponry is so promising in a fantasy series! We know we just saw Asha leaping through flames with an axe held high, but this dragon seems very unafraid and we’re no longer sure who to root for…Īnd it’s sooooo shiny. Not 100% clear on the job description, but we’re definitely interested. If we had to pick someone to hunt down those dragons… she seems like the right choice.ģ. Where do we sign up to be the next Iskari? Our epic fantasy-loving souls are obsessing a little right now #notsorryĭo we need to explain why we started here? Didn’t think so. You’re probably in an excitement induced coma after watching all that promising fantasy goodness, so let’s break it down together, shall we? It’s certainly true that many of the particulars of business have changed. After all, in 1966, when Brooks profiled Xerox, the company’s top-of-the-line copier weighed 650 pounds, cost $27,500, required a full-time operator, and came with a fire extinguisher because of its tendency to overheat. (And Warren, if you’re reading this, I still have your copy.)Ī skeptic might wonder how this out-of-print collection of New Yorker articles from the 1960s could have anything to say about business today. John Brooks is still my favorite business writer. Today, more than two decades after Warren lent it to me-and more than four decades after it was first published- Business Adventures remains the best business book I’ve ever read. “I’ll send you my copy.” I was intrigued: I had never heard of or John Brooks. He didn’t miss a beat: “It’s Business Adventures, by John Brooks,” he said. Not long after I first met Warren Buffett back in 1991, I asked him to recommend his favorite book about business. This book has some of the best prose I’ve read in a while. ‘Long ago when the gods were young and Asgard was new, there came a witch from the edge of the world.’ I was slightly concerned before starting it that it would be too familiar, since I’ve heard these stories from Norse mythology retold a few different times, but I was swept away right from the first line and Angrboda stole my whole heart. Thank you to NetGalley and Titan Books for the eARC in exchange for an honest review. From the most ancient of tales this novel forges a story of love, loss, and hope for the modern age. With help from the fierce huntress Skadi, with whom she shares a growing bond, Angrboda must choose whether she’ll accept the fate that she’s foreseen for her beloved family…or rise to remake their future. But as Angrboda slowly recovers her prophetic powers, she learns that her blissful life-and possibly all of existence-is in danger. Their union produces three unusual children, each with a secret destiny, who Angrboda is keen to raise at the edge of the world, safely hidden from Odin’s all-seeing eye. There she is found by a man who reveals himself to be Loki, and her initial distrust of him transforms into a deep and abiding love. A punishment from Odin for refusing to provide him with knowledge of the future, the fire leaves Angrboda injured and powerless, and she flees into the farthest reaches of a remote forest. Angrboda’s story begins where most witches’ tales end: with a burning. |
